Senior Budget Advocacy & Public Policy Practitioner
Nandang Suherman is a senior civil society practitioner with more than two decades of experience in budget advocacy, public governance, development policy, and citizen participation in Indonesia. Since joining Perkumpulan Inisiatif in 2005, he has consistently worked to advance budget and public policy analysis as instruments for strengthening transparency, accountability, and meaningful citizen engagement in development planning and budgeting. Throughout his professional journey, Nandang has held leadership responsibilities within Perkumpulan Inisiatif, including serving as Head of the Public Governance Department, and has contributed to initiatives aimed at strengthening accountable and responsive local governance.
Nandang has been one of the key contributors to the development of Sekolah Politik Anggaran (SEPOLA), an initiative of Perkumpulan Inisiatif that promotes political budget literacy and strengthens civil society capacity to understand, analyze, monitor, and influence public budgeting processes. He also contributed to Show Me the Money: Budget Advocacy in Indonesia, a publication documenting experiences and lessons from Indonesia’s civil society budget advocacy movement. His experience in promoting participation and transparency in local planning and budgeting, including in Sumedang District, demonstrates an advocacy approach that connects research, budget analysis, community organizing, policy dialogue, and institutional change.
Through this experience, Nandang continues to contribute to strengthening civil society capacity and advancing public policies that are evidence-based, inclusive, transparent, participatory, and responsive to citizens’ needs.
